Happy Birthday, Denis!

Since he asked for it (and he only asked for it every. single. day. for two straight months), he was going to get it! A pink Hello Kitty birthday party.

The invitations were drawn up and sent out...

The cookies were made...

And the decorations were hung.

Then the fun really began. The kids came (unfortunately, rain drove us indoors; fortunately, there was a great indoor playground nearby)...

They bellied up to the bar...

And they tuckered themselves out.

They sang Happy Birthday...

They helped open presents...

And they (they being Denis) said, "This was the best birthday ever!"

Earlier in the week, on his actual birthday, Denis shared cupcakes with his classmates, teachers, and parents. Lucky Boy!

Happy 4th birthday, Denis! We love you!

Sitting in a Tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

I've received a report from my parents that my new redbud has been the tree of choice for a couple of courting cardinals. Apparently, she sits in the tree, waiting patiently, while he searches for food to bring to her. Such a sweet, and seemingly simple courtship! Wish I were there to witness it.

BlogPress Test

A quick post to see how well the BlogPress app works on my shiny new iPad2! Let's see if I can figure out how to add a photo.

That was easy enough, but I'm not sure how to change the position of the photo, or if that is even possible. I also wonder if there's a way to set the text alignment to 'justify' like there is in Blogger.

Anyone out there know more than I do about BlogPress?

By the way, the little guy above was eyeing me as I was walking around our property in Nebraska over spring break. Seems he was coming out for a bit of springtime sun. More on this property of ours later...

Spring Break

Spring break has come and gone, and I think it's what we all needed. I traveled, as previously planned, to Nebraska to see my family, while Jon and Denis ended up going to Thailand with some friends after his parents' trip to Japan was postponed. We were able to relax, recharge, and remove ourselves from the incessant news-watching that had become our reality after the earthquake/tsunami on March 11.

My week at home was wonderful. I was able to see most of my family and a few friends, and I got to do many of the things I was hoping to do while in Nebraska in March.

One of the highlights of the week was having some girl time with my mom and sisters at the fabric store. We all chose fabrics for projects we're working on, or are about to start, and spent half the day pulling bolt upon bolt of fabric from the racks. Thanks for all your help, M&M&M!

With all my new fabric, my mom and I started two new quilts (for Denis and sibling). I chose the log cabin pattern, for its classic design, and fabrics that are similar, yet different, for the two quilts. The first quilt, which will be made of these repeating green blocks, started coming together from the get-go. We all fell in love with the colors of this block! The plaids are a bit wonky (not printed straight on the fabric, and so proved a bit difficult to cut and sew), but they bring a certain masculinity to the quilt that I was hoping for. I absolutely love the two greens in this block, and they were chosen for their reflection of the great outdoors.

The second quilt, which is going to be made of brown blocks, took a little longer to come together. It started out like this, but the two black plaids (which are greats fabrics in and of themselves) ended up feeling too dark to me. And the busy blue print in the middle didn't 'pop' enough for me. Who knew I was so picky!

So, I rummaged around my mom's fabric room and found a dark brown print with a leaf design for the outside strips. We decided to use the reverse side of the fabric, rather than the front, as the softer color on the back coordinated better with the green fabric in the other quilt. I won't even admit to the number of fabrics we tried, or the number of fabric stores I visited, to come up with the right print for the small pieces next to the blue center. These were contenders, but neither ever felt right to me.

I eventually found another plaid that I liked, which I think is going to work well. The center was changed to the same blue that's in the green blocks, which will tie the two quilts together nicely, I think. There's also the same leaf fabric, but in brown, in this block.

And that was much more information than anyone wanted, I realize!

Anyway, thanks Mom, for doing all the piecing for me (and for putting up with all my changes!). By the way, Denis says he wants the green quilt.

A trip home wouldn't be complete without catching a ball game of some sort. This time it was my nephew's (#17) soccer game.

Another highlight was that I bought my first tree. A redbud!

My parents are tree-sitting for me until Jon and I can plant it at our property this summer. Long story short, we're having our current tenant move out and my sister is moving in. Let's just say that both the house and the yard are in some desperate need of TLC, and this tree is the first small improvement we're hoping to make.

The most spectacular highlight was witnessing the sandhill crane migration that takes place every March in Nebraska, a couple hours to the west of where my parents live. It's something I've always wanted to do, and I'm so glad I did. It was spectacular! My parents and I bundled up (the spring-like weather we'd been having up to that point suddenly decided to turn back to winter) on Wednesday afternoon and made the trip west, were we met my friend Gail at the Rowe Sanctuary for the sunset crane viewing.

Before I left on my trip, someone asked what the weather would be like in Nebraska at that time of year. I joked, saying I'd probably experience the full spectrum of weather within a week's time, and that's exactly what happened. There was spring for a couple of days (almost summer-like, as it apparently reached 81F in Lincoln one day), then there was a tornado watch, then a hailstorm, and finally, by week's end, there was winter.

Thanks for scraping the windows for me, Dad!

Meanwhile, in Thailand, my boys were having some fun of their own.

Aftershocks and Meltdowns

If only I were speaking figuratively.

We've been glued to the news all weekend, hoping for a reprieve from the horrific events that have literally shaken Japan over the last 48+ hours. But it just doesn't seem to be coming. The latest reports say that the earthquake on Friday has been 'upgraded' to a 9.0, a couple of coastal cities appear to have been completely obliterated by the tsunami, the death toll has reached 1,200 and will only keep rising, and, most worrisome of all, it's likely that a nuclear meltdown is currently in process in Fukushima prefecture.

It's hard to know what to do, think, or feel... I guess we'll keep waiting for news.

Adoption Update

We heard from our agency this morning that our dossier (a small mountain of paper work) was approved and is on its way to Russia for translation. After everything is translated, we'll be registered in one of the regions where our agency works. We're hoping for Kaliningrad again, but who knows what will happen. And who knows what the timeline will be this time around. Last time, we received our referral (Denis!) six months after our dossier was sent to Russia. Will I jinx it all if I say we're hoping for the same timeframe for this adoption?

We're all ready for a new member to join the family. Just this weekend Denis was complaining that no one was playing with him, even though both Jon and I had just had a turn on the floor playing cars and building forts. Quite seriously, he turned to us and said, "I don't have anyone to play with. Can we go get a brother from the brother shop?"

Happy New Year, Cambodia!

I have an awful habit of not posting after big trips, mostly because I've gotten too lazy to sort through the hundreds of photos we've taken to find the few worth showing. Is it too late to make a New Year's resolution to organize my photos?

Here are a few shots from Cambodia, with more photos of that trip here. (I notice Denis has us giving a thumbs-up in several photos!)

After the hustle and bustle of Vietnam, we loved the slow pace of Siem Reap and exploring the different temples and ruins. Angkor Wat was incredible, but our favorite was Ta Prohm with the trees growing in and among and on top of the temple.

Snow Day!

It wasn't a day off school, but today was a snow day! We woke up to big fluffy flakes coming down (hard to see in the photos), and Denis was beyond excited. "Fiiiinally! It's winter!" He decided to wear his snow boots to school and bring his "snow shovel" in case he needed to help dig out any cars that were stuck in the snow. For those of you who live here on Rokko Island with us, you know how funny that is! The snow never sticks here...it melts as soon as it hits the ground. As we were heading to school, Denis said, "Wow! It's a blizzard out here! I can't wait to build a snowman." I didn't have the heart to tell him that there wouldn't be enough snow for such jolly activities.

Mochi

This week we're celebrating Japan Days at school, and Denis's class participated in a mochi-making activity today. Luckily, his teachers captured a few good shots of him as I wasn't able to go. The first picture is of Denis pounding the mochi (paste-like rice). The following pictures are of him trying to use his chopsticks - he's almost got it! Or maybe not - and of him enjoying the results!

Merry Christmas, Vietnam!
